Aviation Theory Australia was born out of personal experience. When I was working through my Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), I wasn’t just juggling flight hours and exams—I was constantly scraping together money for lessons, only to be hit with nearly $3,000 in costs for textbooks and materials.
It was overwhelming.
That experience stuck with me. So I started this company to build what I wish I’d had back then—affordable, high-quality theory resources created by pilots, for pilots. Our content is designed to give you more time and money to focus on what really matters: your flying.
We’re here to support you through the 7 CASA exams for both fixed and rotary wing CPLs, with material that’s clear, practical, and aligned to your training. Our mission is simple: make top-tier theory training accessible, without breaking the bank.
We’ve steered clear of bulky, outdated textbooks and built a fully online learning system that gives you the freedom to study wherever you are. Whether you're travelling for work, on a cross-country flying trip, or studying from home, all you need is your laptop.
Our platform runs on the same industry-leading Learning Management System (LMS) used by Amazon, Google, and Meta, giving you a seamless, responsive experience with structured content, real-time progress tracking, and interactive quizzes—all mapped directly to the CASA syllabus for each exam.
This means when you get your Knowledge Deficiency Report (KDR)—which you receive even if you pass—you’ll be able to quickly find and revise the exact areas you need to improve on.
Every part of this system is designed to save you time, reduce your costs, and let you focus more on what really matters—getting airborne.
The CASA theory exams are designed to test your understanding, not just your memory. Rote learning might get you part of the way, but truly grasping the concepts will set you up for success—not just in the exam room, but in the cockpit.
There are seven theory exams required for the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL):
Of these, Human Factors, Meteorology, and Navigation are common to both Fixed Wing and Rotary Wing licences. The remaining subjects are specific to the aircraft type you're training in.
Before sitting any exam, we recommend checking the CASA website for the latest exam requirements. CASA outlines what you’re allowed to bring—including permitted stationery, maps, and legislative documents—so it’s worth reviewing these carefully to avoid surprises on the day.
CASA exams are administered by ASPEQ, and testing centres are available across the country. We recommend booking your session at least three weeks in advance, as popular locations can fill up quickly—especially near major cities.
Over time, we’ve found that a particular order works best for most students. This suggested sequence helps build your knowledge progressively and aligns with how the exam content overlaps:
Note: All exams require a 70% pass mark, except for Air Law, which requires 80%.
As a general guide, we recommend about one month of study per subject. However, students with more time and commitment can comfortably complete each exam in 1–2 weeks.
